When I came across Louise Hay's picture recently ( not the one above ), I was horrified to see that she has done some plastic surgery work to her face!

My immediate reaction was shock followed by irritation, which worked up to me feeling betrayed and anger towards her for betraying millions of people. Those who don't know Hay, She is well known metaphysical author whose core teachings are about accepting oneself and healing from inside out.

A few thought I was over reacting but I just felt I was voicing my opinion loudly because she is a public figure and one that I look up to and a lot of us look up to..!

I felt that she didn't follow what she preached and that she must have looked at herself, god knows for how many days in the mirror and thought negatively enough about her appearance, her wrinkles that she had to go get a surgery!!!!!! What ever happened to self acceptance and loving oneself as it is - teachings?? So, these teachings are for the poor who can't afford but the rest can go for plastic surgery?

Should I consider this as a betrayal? What kind of teaching is this when the teacher won't follow her own advice?

The rest of the day I stewed.

May be these spiritual teachers have been put up on a pedestal? Are we expecting too much out of them? Is there something called accountability?

Should I stop following her because she choose plastic surgery over self-acceptance? I am not at all against tastefully done plastic surgery but surely didn't expect Hay to be one of the candidates!

It took me some time to process this.
Why are gods depicted always as eternally youthful? I have not come across one wrinkly god or goddess!  If one has to be a celebrity author then one has to look youthful, defy gravity and aging? or .... that May be spiritual teachers get burnt out! ....May be as human we all tend to be hypocrites one time or the other however hard we try or May be she had a truly, wonderful reason why she did it which I didn't know or would not understand!

May be instead of worrying about her choices, I should just respect the fact that I don't know her life or her reasons & just stop judging her and do the best I can with my own choices... and remember that I too will be scrutinized one day!

  1. I also think its sad and disappointing. Louise Hay clearly has had plastic surgery and i would hope that she puts out some sort of public statement about it. -

  2. its really obvious, i did some research and found your blog, i am happy i was right when i thought like she looked like she has had plastic surgery. Why write so many books about healing and health and then decide to go under the knife to disguise the natural healing process, its very worrying really to be honest !!! I would have thought she would have recommended getting old with grace and beauty the natural way.! wow do not know what else to say

    2. It's not about financial substance. It is about accepting yourself as you have been publicly teaching, which is a self-realization issue resulting in a lack of integrity.

    3. I am not sure what is the connection with plastic surgery and Louise Hay teachings. Why about considering plastic surgery to be healing for her. Let's stop judging someone else and lets start embracing our own life and Thanks Louise Hay for her wonderful teachings. 🙏

  3. Louise Hay is human after all and has her weak spots...she admits still having to fight against her negative thoughts: lets not judge a lets take the positive statement that help us; i know that her teachings did help me: to forgive, to be more positive, to have a leap of faith. and being positive does attract positive in your life; if she is scared of aging....so it is something she will have to work on, like every other human being

  4. totally contradicting...I felt like you when I discovered her picture on web! Felt betrayed too, don't really know if she applies her teachings to herself, obviously not as her face looks pretty scary.
Anyway I'll forgive her as I understood her message :-)

  5. Surely Louise Hay feels we are all spiritual beings. She may view her body like any suit of clothing she would have tailored.

  6. Let's not forget that Louise Hay's books are ultimately about self improvement. What is inside is far more important than outward appearance. No one would criticize her for updating her wardrobe, all she has done is updated her looks.

  7. What we perceive as our greatest weaknesses or challenges often become our greatest gifts to the world. Louise's struggle with self worth may be ongoing, either way it has served as the perfect compost and she has inspired and empowered many.

  8. We all don't wear attractive cloths, cut, style or color our hair, most wear make up? Some have tattoos or jewelry? Leave her be. She just wants to be attractive. So what?

  9. Don't throw the baby out with the bath water. Feeling triggered in this manner is a chance to look within. Why feel betrayed, unless you somehow put all of your hope into SOMEONE ELSE 'fixing' you?

Is any of what she has said worth less? Unless we were all looking outside ourselves for some one or thing to save us, we could take responsibility for making our OWN choice to think the thoughts we think, and feel the way we feel, without blaming or criticizing.

Use the 'trigger' of disappointment and betrayal to understand trust in ourselves. If her words were powerful for you once, then no matter what the subject, they can be powerful again. Its just a thought and a thought can be changed. . Or not <3 Its just a choice.

  10. A facelift, technically known as a rhytidectomy is a type of cosmetic surgery procedure used to give a more youthful facial appearance.

  11. I used to want to be changed because I was not happy with myself. Using affirmations has helped me be more loving with my own self. I wish she practiced what she teaches. No self acceptance whatsoever. You grow old - old we are and old we are more attractive than wearing a mask that does not fit and looks deformed. Hard? Deal with it - practice your affirmations.
